When the calendar turns to November in The Buckeye State, thoughts turn to two things: The Game between Ohio State and Michigan, and Thanksgiving Day.
This will be the second time during football season that Michigan vs. Ohio State odds will be available for mobile or retail sports wagering, which launched in the state on Jan. 1, 2023. This year’s game is Nov. 30 (noon Eastern, FOX TV) in Columbus.
But getting back to two days before, Thanksgiving. Using Google Trends, BetOhio.com analyzed the most popular Thanksgiving side dishes for Ohio residents, using search results of each side dish from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 2023. The dishes considered led in total searches across the United States; the ones considered were mashed potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, candied yams, brussels sprouts and cranberry sauce.

Stuffing Is The King Of Thanksgiving Side Dishes
No surprise, carbs aplenty will adorn Thanksgiving plates alongside the turkey across Ohio, as is the case everywhere in the nation.
For instance, stuffing (with a search interest score of 12) came in first in our data, taken at a time when the holiday was at the top of the list for planning a big meal with family and friends. The Ohio Farm Bureau website has a stuffing recipe – well, they call it a dressing recipe for a dish baked in a separate pan. It includes an ingredient not always found in the dish: Half a tablespoon of sweet paprika, a nod to the Hungarian immigrants that have arrived in Ohio through the decades.
That wave, of course, started well before legal, regulated Ohio sports betting was available.
Other Sides Up For Consideration
Green bean casserole was second on our list, with a search interest score of 10, before the parade of starchy and heavy goodness continues with macaroni and cheese (search interest score of nine), mashed potatoes (eight) and sweet potato casserole (six) round out the top five most popular sides to go along with the turkey on Thanksgiving.
After that? It’s back to football, and the massive OSU-UM game. Check out our Ohio State playoff seed projections to see where the Buckeyes might be heading this postseason.
