Can the Guardians Make the Playoffs?

Yes, the Guardians can still make the playoffs. And likely will.

The MLB regular season is long, and it only started in April. It will be at least a few months before teams begin to be officially eliminated from playoff contention. That includes the Guardians, a team oddsmakers currently believe has a decent chance of making the postseason and a long-shot chance of reaching and winning the 2024 World Series.

Cleveland Guardians World Series History

The Cleveland Guardians were founded in 1896. Then called The Columbus Buckeyes, the team was part of the Western League, a minor baseball league in the Midwest United States.

In a significant move in 1900, the team relocated to Cleveland, changing their name to the Lake Shores. They eventually changed their name to the Indians and became a founding member of the AL after Western League founder Ban Johnson changed the name to the American League. This marked a pivotal moment in the team's history. The Guardians are one of just four remaining founding American League teams, along with the Tigers, Red Sox, and White Sox.

The team won its first World Series championship in 1920, one year after the infamous Black Sox scandal rocked the national pastime to its core and nearly destroyed the sport. Nearly three decades would pass before the Indians won their second title in 1948.

But if those 28 years between championships felt agonizingly long for Indians fans, then the 75-year (and counting) wait for its third World Series title likely feels interminable. It is the longest active World Series title drought of any team in Major League Baseball. It's also the second-longest drought for any team in the four major American sports (baseball, football, hockey, basketball); only the Arizona Cardinals, who last won a championship in 1947, has gone more years without winning another title. The Indians came close to another World Series title in 2016, but blew a 3-1 series lead against Chicago.

Have the Cleveland Guardians Won a World Series?

The Cleveland Guardians have won two World Series titles, in 1920 and 1948

  • 1920: The Indians beat the Brooklyn Robins, 5-2, to win the World Series and cap off a season that would be remembered for the death of shortstop Ray Chapman, who died Aug. 17 after being struck in the head by a pitch from Yankee hurler Carl Mays. Chapman remains one of just two batters who have died after being struck by pitches during official games.
  • 1948: Led by future Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller, the Indians beat the Boston Braves in six games to capture their second world championship.

How Many Times Have the Guardians Won the American League?

The Guardians have won the American League pennant 6 times.

  • 1920: Led by Tris Speaker, the Indians beat out the Chicago White Sox just one year after the infamous 1919 Black Sox scandal rocked baseball
  • 1948: The Indians finished 1 game ahead of the Boston Red Sox
  • 1954: The Indians' 111-43 record sets the new high water mark for season winning percentage by an American League team. It's a record that stands today.
  • 1995: Albert Belle finishes second in the MVP voting after becoming the first player to ever hit 50 home runs and 50 doubles in one season.
  • 1997: The Indians win the American League Central on the strength of an 86-75 record.
  • 2016: Returning to the World Series for the first time since 1997, the Indians blow a 3-1 series lead over the Chicago Cubs, allowing the Cubs to finally win the World Series title they'd been chasing for over 100 years.

How Many Times Have the Guardians Made the Playoffs?

The Cleveland Guardians have made the MLB playoffs 16 times in their history and won 2 World Series championships.
