NL Manager of the Year Odds 2024: Pat Murphy Tops The List

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

The Cincinnati Reds surprised many last season. Thanks to the play of rookies like Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain, the Reds emerged as playoff contenders midway through the season and remained in the hunt until the final weekend.

Based on that, many Reds fans and Ohio sports betting backers were hopeful to see how manager David Bell’s team could build upon their 82-80 campaign in 2023. That has not quite worked out during the 2024 season. Through Sept. 9, Cincinnati stands at 69-75, second to last in the National League Central.

With the Reds fading fast from the playoff picture, BetOhio updated our NL Manager of the Year Odds with less than a month to go in the regular season. Unfortunately, the Reds' David Bell is off the board.

Brewers' Murphy Now Heavy Favorite

Instead of being in the running for NL Manager of the Year, Bell finds his seat getting warmer. Some wonder if a change in the dugout could turn the Reds around ahead of next season.

Not surprisingly, Bell is no longer among the contenders. Instead, first-year Milwaukee Brewers skipper Pat Murphy has a stranglehold on the futures board.

FanDuel, one of the most popular legal Ohio sportsbook apps, lists Murphy at -550. The Padres' Mike Shildt (+360), the Phillies' Rob Thomson (+2500) and the Mets' Carlos Mendoza (also +2500) are the only others who could factor into the race at this point.

Murphy, who replaced the well-regarded Craig Counsell ahead of this season, has the Brewers with a commanding NL Central lead as of Sept. 9. The Brew Crew is 9.0 games ahead of the Cubs for first place, and Murphy has continued the winning ways without star outfielder Christian Yelich, who will miss the rest of the season with a back injury.

Over the past 10 years, no Reds managers have won the Manager of the Year. The last NL Central skipper to do so was Shildt when he managed the Cardinals in 2019. Before that, Joe Maddon of the Chicago Cubs was the most recent manager in the division to win the honor, in 2015.
