It appears that the end could be nigh for Donovan Mitchell’s time with the Cleveland Cavaliers. A report from Shams Charania of The Athletic spells out the disconnect between the star guard and the franchise. That would no doubt shift Cleveland Cavs futures for sportsbooks in Ohio.
With that in mind, BetOhio.com broke down which NBA teams could potentially swoop in to acquire Mitchell this offseason. Hint: The New York City area native could have a homecoming in the new league year.

Cleveland reached the second round of the playoffs, but the Celtics ended Cleveland’s season on Wednesday, eliminating the Cavs in Boston with a 113-98 win in Game 5 of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Celtics are big favorites at Ohio sports betting apps to win the 2024 NBA title.
The Cavs have a “super max” extension at risk if Mitchell decides to play out his final season before hitting a player option at the end of next season. So there could be movement in Cleveland sooner rather than later.
Mitchell has a salary cap hit of $35.4 million next season before hitting that opt out. That could inspire Cleveland to either pull the trigger on what’s rumored to be a five-year, $208.5 super max extension, or to move on from their star backcourt member.
Our odds are exclusive to BetOhio.com, which has the best Ohio betting promotions. But operators offer plenty of NBA betting action even after Cleveland’s elimination from the playoffs.
Where Will Donovan Mitchell Play Next?
It looks like Mitchell’s top suitors are among the league’s big spenders, with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers likely being at the top of the list of NBA clubs that will do whatever it takes to land a star of his stature.
Given Mitchell’s roots in Westchester County and the Knicks’ current run in the playoffs under head coach Tom Thibodeau, it’s safe to say that New York will have their hooks in early if Mitchell is bandied about as a trade option once the league year wraps up in June. There is also the question of who will be coaching in Cleveland; see our Cleveland Cavaliers next head coach odds for our latest update.
The Lakers are dealing with the potential exit of LeBron James, who has an opt out in his contract next month. That could inspire Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka to make a big time move and acquire Mitchell, either to shore up L.A.’s rotation or to serve as a scoring replacement for one of the game’s greatest stars. At BetOhio.com, we have the latest LeBron James trade rumors.
The free-spending Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat are at +1000 of acquiring Mitchell, followed by upstarts such as the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets (+1500 each) and a darkhorse in the Atlanta Hawks (+1750 odds). But the most likely scenario on our list (at +175 odds) is that Mitchell either stays in Cleveland or joins a team other than the ones we have mentioned.
