Few things speak to the American existence quite like the spectacle of watching a cadre of men and women gulping down as many hot dogs as they can stomach on the shores of the Atlantic on Independence Day.
That’s exactly what a cast of characters has done in Brooklyn on July 4, annually for the past 52 years. The Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest takes place again this year on Jully 4 at Coney Island.
This year, reigning champ Joey Chestnut, who has won the title 16 times, has been banned from the classic American contest after he agreed to a partnership with Impossible Foods, the plant-based foods company. BetOhio.com, the home of Ohio sports betting, wanted to see what states are most highly anticipating the 2024 contest, despite Chestnut’s absence. Using Google Trends, we ranked states based on their search interest scores for “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest,” from June 10-17, 2024.
Rank | State | Search Interest Score |
1 | South Dakota | 100 |
2 | Vermont | 89 |
3 | Connecticut | 86 |
4 | Iowa | 83 |
T5 | Pennsylvania | 81 |
T5 | New Hampshire | 81 |
T5 | New York | 81 |
8 | New Jersey | 80 |
9 | Nebraska | 79 |
10 | Ohio | 78 |
Ohio’s love of all things Americana led to the Buckeye State’s inclusion on the states with the most interest in the 2024 hot dog eating competition. But the state finished well behind the country’s leading hot dog viewers, at No. 10.
As of June 20, no major, legally regulated Ohio sports betting apps were offering odds on the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The top state searching for the hot dog eating contest, according to our research, was South Dakota, which had a perfect search interest score of 100. Vermont (89 search interest score), Connecticut (86) and Iowa (83) rounded out the top four. Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and New York (81 each) tied for fifth.
New York’s neighbors to the south (New Jersey) had a search interest score of 80, followed by Nebraska (79) the Ohio (78) to round out the top 10 states. So there you have the full picture of the states that will most certainly be invested in the gluttony at Coney Island this July 4.
