For the second time in as many seasons, the Ohio State Buckeyes need a new offensive coordinator. Chip Kelly, after one year in Columbus under coach Ryan Day, is joining forces with Pete Carroll as the next offensive coordinator of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders.
Ohio State is coming off of a College Football Playoff national championship and has long been one of the biggest names in college football. So there’s no shortage of suitors for the program's OC role and the Buckeyes will be among the favorites to win the CFP title again in the 2025 season at Ohio betting sites.
With that in mind, BetOhio.com broke down some odds on who will replace Kelly in Columbus, with a host of quality options for Day to pick from this fall:
Coach | Current Position | Percentage Chance | Odds |
Brian Hartline | Ohio State Co-Offensive Coordinator & WRs Coach | 18.2% | +450 |
Kevin Wilson | Former Tulsa Head Coach | 14.3% | +600 |
Jason Candle | Toledo Head Coach | 12.5% | +700 |
Joe Moorhead | Akron Head Coach | 12.5% | +700 |
Neal Brown | Former West Virginia Head Coach | 10.0% | +900 |
Will Stein | Oregon Offensive Coordinator | 8.3% | +1100 |
Jeff Nixon | Syracuse Offensive Coordinator | 7.4% | +1250 |
Mike Shanahan | Indiana Offensive Coordinator | 7.4% | +1250 |
Other |
| 9.1% | +1000 |
These odds are provided by BetOhio.com, where real money Ohio sportsbook promotions are always found.
Kelly is a former head coach at Oregon and UCLA, plus he has stint as an NFL head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. Now he is returning to the pros after spending a year in Columbus at the side of Day, for whom Kelly has been a mentor.
Kelly returns to the NFL some nine years after the Niners fired him, setting the table for his return to that stage in 2025. And Day, now a CFP championship-winning head coach, can land another play caller of his choice after the Buckeyes captured their first national title since 2014 by defeating Notre Dame on Jan. 20 in the final of the first 12-team CFP playoff.
At bet365 Ohio Sportsbook, OSU is the favorite at +450 odds to win the CFP title next season, ahead of Texas (+600) and Georgia (+650).
Right now, our odds pick to replace Kelly as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator is his now-former colleague. Buckeyes co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline is our top pick, at +450. He is followed by Kevin Wilson (+600), who held the role from 2017-22. He left to become head coach at Tulsa, where he was fired in November after less than two seasons.
Should Day look to go outside of the family to replace Kelly, keep an eye on two-time MAC Coach of the Year, Jason Candle of Toledo. We list him at +700 odds alongside another MAC head coach, Joe Moorhead of Akron. Former West Virginia and Troy head coach Neal Brown is next up, at +900.
Longshots to keep an eye on in Columbus include Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein (+1100), then Syracuse OC Jeff Nixon and Indiana OC Mike Shanahan, at +1250 apiece to replace Kelly. Ohio sportsbook apps often list “the field” as a choice and so do we, at +1000 odds for any candidate not listed.
